What can a good domain name do for you? Plus 5 quick steps to owning it.

Your domain name is your address on the world wide web,

your own piece of virtual real estate. It’s the ‘street front’ of your internet business.

Choosing a perfect domain name for your website can be frustrating. It starts out exciting and can be confusing!

10 attributes of a good domain name.

  • General image is appealing.
  • encompasses the business accurately
  • in a few short words.
  • super easy to remember
  • Short, smart, clear.
  • Not so clever that no-one gets it!
  • A popular search term
  • Easy to spell
  • No hyphens.
  • No copyright infringements.

Smart Company.com.au , a business news website, analysed the power of a domain name with this fine example;

From ‘Beep.com’ to ‘CarLoans.com’:

How a domain name change resulted in a $40 million turnover boost

In 2013, Shaun McGowan’s business, Beep.com.au, was turning over $60 million. Five months later the company has grown by 60%, now exceeding $100 million in turnover, through one simple change – the domain name. car

McGowan purchased a new, premium domain name CarLoans.com.au  and since then the business’s click throughs have increased, its marketing spend has reduced and turnover has increased by $40 million.

“We have also noticed ……. our name is now seen as the authority in car loans because of its natural association with CarSales.com.au”

Let’s look at the domain name Nike.com. They sell running shoes, in case you haven’t heard, with sales over $6billion!

Nike’s original business name, which was BlueRibbonSports is obviously not their domain name now.

Thanks to their first employee, Jeff Johnson, who suggested a new name to honor the greek goddess of victory, an athletic beauty with winged heels…Nike. It was the superior quality product that got the ball bouncing. Then Michael Jordan and the brand kept it bouncing along at No.1 in athletic wear.

See the impact branding can have on your web presence. When you want to buy really good running shoes, do you search Nike or running shoes?

What do you want your domain name to do?

  • Describe what your audience is searching for.
  • It can be your brand name or both.
  • It can be merchandise-able.
  • It can be sold in the future.
  • It can draw in customers who are ready to buy now.
  • It can depict authority.

Domain Name Extensions;

Not for profit sites are about sharing information and networking…Use the extensions  .org   .net  .info

Companies use .co   Governments use .gov   And there are new extensions  like  .guru   .rocks  for fun.

.com is for people who mean business, a commercial intent.

5 quick steps to owning your own domain name.

1. Think of a handful of keywords relevant to your niche.

2. Play around with a name generator like bustaname or domainr. (Free)

3. Choose a name and check it’s availability at namecheap or GoDaddy.

4. Register and pay for your ‘chosen one’. (from $4 per year)

5. Transfer the DNS to a hosting provider. (Video instructions here.)

In January 2016 a new domain name register was launched.

The good news is… you don’t need 5 steps to get one.

One step at the one price.

I am in the process of creating a new website about bamboo products, with reviews and affiliate links. Right now, it is just a ‘shell’ site with no content. but I do have a sign up spot for my newsletter.

The domain name I got is “WhereToBuyBamboo.com” because I figured that phrase would go in front of anything a person is searching for. Even with not one post on my site yet, I already had 2 people sign up for my newsletter!

The domain name can definitely help send people to your site, if chosen well.
BTW – I am also using Wealthy Affiliate for hosting and they are fabulous!

Wow! Keywords are awesome and keywords in your URL are very hard to compete with. I think you’ve nailed it with ‘wheretobuybamboo.com’
Keep your posts tightly ‘on theme’ and you have an authority site. …with affiliate links…you are off and running.
      Go really well from Janelle.
