Want To Work Online At Home? The 3 Essentials You Must Have, World Wide.

There are only three things you absolutely must have to work online.

A computer, an internet connection and a website. In this article you can find advice on the system that works best for you.

Wherever you lay your hat…that’s your home.Wordpress For Beginners

You can work online from home, or away from home. You can travel and work online like I do. Or you can jump in that big ole RV and go schmoozing your way through deserts and valleys. Your home could be high in the log cabin mountains with grizzlys fogging up your windows, or on a meandering Euro river flanked by castles of myth and legend…. a condo in Palm Springs, a beach shack in Costa Rica, a highrise in Moscow, a fale in Samoa. Your home could be a back pack! So long as you choose the right gear, you can work from anywhere.

The three essentials to working online.

Computer, internet and website. The three essentials you must have to work online at home.

  1. What is the best computer for working online at homework online at home

  • Windows or Mac Operating Systems;

First question is which system do you like using. Both Windows and Macintosh are perfect for web development. There are other systems but they are more suited to power users (Linux) or web surfing only (Chrome OS).

In 2016, building a website does not require the high performance operating systems like it used to. Average Joe doesn’t even need coding skills anymore, with the open source WordPress. Web users expect rich and varied content, fully enhanced by images, videos and good quality audio.

Windows 10 has been very well received by web developers and small  business and the new Mac version OS X El Capitan is reportedly the bees knees. You can’t go wrong with either operating systems.  The great news is,  even dinosaurs like Windows XP can handle basic website building comfortably, if that is where you need to start from.

Be aware new advanced OS chew up data faster than the older systems.

  • Desktop or  Laptop;

          Need portability? Laptops like the Macbook Air is the most light weight, about 1kg. It is ultra portable and gives a seamless UX. But don’t just go by weight alone. The other important aspects when using a laptop for your work station are discussed in the next few points below.

If your home has the luxury of an office zone or if you intend to be a power user ( graphics and gaming,) you really should consider investing in a good desk top system. Desktops have the advantage of more powerful components and you can upgrade an aging PC piece by piece.

  • Screen size;

Working online means many hours staring at your screen. To avoid eye strain, nothing less than a 15” will suffice, in my humble opinion. On the laptop I prefer a 17″ screen but they are extra bulk and weight. Tablets, iPads and Ultrabooks  have their place for casual use and a portable supplement. The screens are too small and they are functionally limited for web design. Touch screen versions are unsuited to long term use.

In the daily working life of an affiliate marketer, you have to consider things like eye strain and even posture. Take regular breaks, drink water, stretch occasionally and work while standing and sitting. You are in it for the long haul.

  • Battery life;

For Digital Nomads the battery life of your laptop is a major consideration. It depends too on the kind of work you are doing on screen. Emails and writing up copy don’t use much battery power, but if you are downloading movies or gaming you will chew up the battery life a lot faster.

For the best user experience in Laptops these are my recommendations.

The Macbook Pro is slightly lighter to carry, but they are both more than capable of running a home based (or any where) website business online.

My best choices in DeskTop PC complete units are these, one Mac, one Windows.

Both systems are ideal for a home office business. They both have 8G RAM, but the iMac has 6 X storage capacity and a superior graphics card.  Both desktops mentioned here are new generation ‘All- In – One’ units. The components are fitted into the monitor’s base, giving a sleek and more spacious desk area with fewer cables.  YES! UGLY TOWER GONE!

2. Internet connections and working online at home.work online at home

  • Data;

How much do you need? Creating a website does not use a huge amount of data. But as your business grows, maybe with numerous rich websites, so will your data demand. Data usage is also governed by your operating system. The newer systems use data faster because of their superior graphics and speed, allowing you to achieve more in a shorter time.

 A beginner working online at home will have change from 5Gig of data per month. But a quick poll of my web developer colleagues, shows they all prefer to have unlimited data. See below which carrier they preferred on each continent.

  • Speed;

We have all experienced slow internet connections at times, Ya, nothing more frustrating than Dial Up speed, now that we have options. The majority of countries now have choices of 3G and 4G and G Fast networks, dropping back to 2G in remote areas (better than nothing!) Go for the highest Gs.

  • Delivery;

DeskTops have the option of cable modems or wireless routers to receive data. Beware of the free modems that come with your service provider’s data plans, they are often the weakest link your system. Modem upgrades are available online of course!

For a laptop business on the move a portable modem is your cell phone, using Hotspot tethering. Smartphones since 2010 are hotspot capable on 3G and 4G networks. The iphone 3 just missed out.

The USB ‘dongle’ or ‘stick’ is the most portable router on the market, they come in a variety of bundled monthly or annual plans.

  • Range;

If you are a traveller, like me, it’s good to know where the outer limits of your internet connection lie. In remote areas, my service drops from 4G back to 3G,  to 2G and then to Economy and zero. 2G and Economy are about as useful as zero, so I surrender to pen and paper for a while..take photos…play ukulele!

There are a number of satellite Wi Fi hotspot systems on the market. While the hardware costs are similar to a new iphone, the data plans are way up there in price! You get worldwide coverage excluding the extreme polar regions, but the cost is prohibitive for average Joe…$1350.00 per month for 2 gig of data. Whaaaa?.

Most popular carriers for data plans are..

Australia… Amaysim 4G, 94% coverage, good data packages .

USA …. T Mobile 4G, countrywide coverage, great unlimited data prices.

UK ….Vodafone 3G, 99% coverage, good value.

Europe…. Keepgo 3G, strong coverage, great data packages.

South America….Keepgo 3G, reliable coverage, good prices.

3. Run a website from home.jobs online for teens

  • Cost;

Website prices can vary widely. It depends on what you want to do and who creates it. For example; A simple catalogue style WordPress site with a shopping cart can cost from $1000 upwards. A more complex or prestige site can cost up to $25,000.

You can buy a simple niche site already set up and ready to earn from as little as $400. The best company offering these is called ‘Human Proof Designs’. They are definitely worth investigating and they show you how much that website is capable of earning too. HPD also provide a training program and support system to get you on your way to working and earning online at home. Read my Review.

  • Knowledge;

Running a website business involves adding pages of information and photos/videos about your business and the products you are promoting. Usually this is done within the framework of a targeted niche of your choice. I briefly mentioned my niches above. It is all about sharing the knowledge you already have or want to learn about. Read how Janita works in her ‘rare parrot’ niche site. There is a good example of teenagers working online here.

  • Technical Skills;

Have you ever purchased an item online? Paid a bill? Sent and received an email? Have you uploaded photos to Facebook or Pinterest? Have you typed (with just two fingers?) These are the basic skills similar to those required to build a WordPress website.

Learn WordPress from Zero to First Blog .

You can do a short and cheap introductory course like “WordPress From Zero To First Blog” to get going. My friend Marion Black will guide you effectively through the steps to operating a WordPress website. This little course could save you months of fumbling around on your own. Click the image to see the details of Marions course.

  • Marketing Skills;

It is important to understand how to get your website seen by the people who will buy your product offerings. There are clear methods to gain a prominent online presence for your website. Online entrepreneurs use a combination of content marketing (writing articles with info and solutions for their audience, SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and social media marketing to improve their pagerank in Google and the other search engines.

If you want to work online at home, find a legitimate training course that can teach you the right way to build and grow your website. Once you achieve successful rank, you can leverage that knowledge to upscale your business and even create more websites.

There is only one program I recommend when it comes to learning how to create your own online business.

Come take a look in my little world for a moment.

Home for me is a cruising yacht. Today my office is bobbing around in a busy little bay somewhere south of Sydney. In this line of work anyone can work online at home, including nomads like me.

I work in the field of affiliate marketing. I have a couple websites about the more interesting parts of my life. Sailing and traveling go hand in hand for me and I always have my salty sea dog, Xena, by my side.

Naturally I have a website all about old dogs. Xena the Jack Russell Terrier is nearly twenty years old, so I have a good deal of insight into what makes old dogs like her tick… and what makes them sick! I write about her misadventures and I write about the products that have been useful or a waste of money. I try to give useful information to other old dog owners. I mean other owners of old dogs!

I get paid by affiliate networks.

You have heard of  Amazon and maybe Commission Junction. I choose the products to discuss from their huge lists. When people buy any of the products I mention, I will earn a small commission.

My other website concerns travelling and I’m working on a new site in the boating niche. work online at homeI have agreements with a couple of private affiliate programs in the travel insurance sector and yacht charter companies and I also affiliate with reputable online training programs and software products.

These small commissions add up.

Can you grasp the sheer volume of people who shop and search online? Billions of them online every day you soon see how vast the audience is. They all are seeking information and things to buy, for their dogs and their boats and their vacations and so much more.

My work doesn’t really feel like work.

Working on websites gives me total control over my schedule, instead of the schedule controlling me. To be honest, I struggle with the discipline of consistent publishing. It’s hard to step away from the sundeck and the scenery sometimes.

Even after two years of working online at home, I’m still trying to balance work and play. It is all just part of self employment. I need to find a workable rhythm to get stuff done.

Wealthy Affiliate is a long established leader in their industry. What also sets them apart is they have completely removed the risk factor for you. It’s the only platform where you can get 2 free websites and 10 free lessons. Yeh Free! No Credit Card required, thank you very much! Join here.

And away we go.

It’s just me, my husband, the dog, the yacht, the laptop and the…no that’s all. We’ve just started a new cruising year with an exploration of all the bays south of Sydney Harbour, Australia.

We sailed out of Sydney on the afternoon nor’easter bound for an overnight stop in Botany Bay. There we checked out Inscription Point, the historical landing site of Captain James Cook who claimed Australia for the British Empire, 1770.

Next day we skipped into a most beautiful inlet a few miles south of Botany, called Jibbon Beach in Port Hacking. I can still see the Sydney skyline in the distance, but this place feels like miles from nowhere. A cliff walk revealed the stunning and ancient aboriginal rock art depicting the dreaming stories of the Dharawal people. Tomorrow we go upstream.

    Something I like that you pointed out is screen size. I agree with you that you need at least a 17 inch. Mine is around 15.5 and it’s too small to focus on, even though it’s a bit larger than standard size these days. Plus the battery sucks. The second the power cord is unplugged, my laptop shuts off. I’ve been needing a new one for a while.

      Hi Gina, the Lenovo z70 has Windows 10 and a 17 inch screen. Battery life will depend on how much is going on on screen. There are a few tips to save power. You can dim your display and go sleep mode sooner. It sounds like your battery is nearly dead. Some older brands are still replaceable. Try Battery World.

    HI there,

    that was a brilliant read. Cashed up nomadic lifestyle. I tend to disagree about screen size 15, 6 is what I use and is big enough. Some dont want a bigger heavier more cumbersome laptop to carry around.

    I tend to travel a lot also and thus limit the size and weight of my laptop. Battery life? ohh you are spot on there, always make sure long life and a back up battery, especially when travelling, as you can end up in countries where there are a LOT of power outs.

      Sometimes you have to stop doing what you don’t want to do, so you can start doing what you want.

    Wow! I really enjoyed reading every bit of that. You are extremely informative and a really good writer (I should get you to write my posts for me).

    How long does it take to get your site up and running and getting the traffic you need to make those commissions?

    You obviously make pretty decent money (don’t worry not going to ask you how much) to be able to enjoy living that sailing around the world life. I would love to visit another country (I have never been outside of my own).

      How long is a piece of string? The perpetual question of new affiliates. I have been working on this site for two years and I feel I still have a long way to go. We pull income from a few sources but I am attempting to create a system that is independent on locality. So, mobile and passive is my focus for generating that and affiliate marketing is the vehicle.

      I am not a grand or flashy spender, compared to most of my friends and family. I am trying to leave a big impact with a small footprint. Simplicity is good. Thanks for reading, Janelle.

    Hi Janelle,
    I think that a 17 inch screen is a good size for a laptop. I use my laptop exclusively for affiliate marketing and I’m definitely enjoying being a digital nomad.
    I have an older Lenovo R61 that has a 14 inch screen which is enough for me to work without significant eye strain.

    I’m not a nomad. I’m more of a crusty old reclusive internet marketer, but I love that I can run my business from my laptop. In fact, I am forever amazed at all the things I can do with my laptop.

    My laptop has a 15″ screen and I’ll be moving up to a 17″ soon. It does help the eyes.
