Finding An Affiliate Program.
I want you to do this for me here and now…
Open a new tab in your browser and type in a word to describe something you like, just any old word like porcelain dolls or Harley Davidson or trout fishing or pyjama fashion. OK? Now after your word (keyword), leave a space and type this; + affiliate program. eg; Harley Davidson + Affiliate Program
The way I do it.
In my browser, I typed doll + affiliate program, just because doll is a short word to type , right…not because I care about dolls so much. Let’s use whatever URL comes up first in my search for ‘dolls + affiliate programs’ as our example.
“Rooti Dolls Affiliate Program. After about 1 minute of looking at their site I can see that Rooti Dolls are unique but not expensive, around $60 USD. They have characteristics of different cultures and backgrounds, hence the name. Rooti Dolls are unique because they have a voice that speaks in multiple languages. The company produces a range of fashion designer dolls, BHM dolls, Music inspired dolls, NGD dolls and pageant dolls, with or without the voice.
OK, so if your niche is ‘dolls of the world’ or ‘educational toys’ or ‘language learning’ or ‘roots and heritage’ this might be a good affiliate program for you. Interestingly, Genealogy is a high demand niche with a hungry audience. Note how Rooti Dolls crosses a few different niche categories, indicating a broader audience and potentially increased sales.
Terms of the Rooti Dolls affiliate program example
- 10% commission on every sale (approx $6USD per sale.)
- they track your sales, commissions and payments through their website
- payments are made monthly through Paypal
- they provide stylish banner ads to copy and paste onto your website
- you apply to be approved as a suitable affiliate
- no mention of cookie life or minimum payouts
- new product with no proven sales
Do you remember Cabbage Patch Dolls back in the ‘80’s? Cabbage Patch Dolls were a sales phenomenon, reaching multi millions in sales and revenue. If your website is in one of these niches the Rooti Dolls affiliate program could add a tidy income stream to your Paypal account every month.
Affiliate ID; identification number.
When you are accepted into an affiliate program you are designated a unique affiliate ID. It looks like a string of letters and numbers. Here is one of my raw affiliate links. http://www.wealthyaffiliate.com?a_aid=d7a7a687 If you click on this one, you will be taken to a product that I like to recommend, which has nothing to do with dolls and everything to do with affiliate marketing. There is a simple link feature on WordPress websites that make these long links look far less ugly!
Each program you enlist in will give you a unique ID. You need to create a file to store all of your affiliate ID’s and related details like site URL, rates and product . An Excel spreadsheet is a great place to store this info, so you can access at a glance.
Private Affiliate Programs and Affiliate Networks.
The Rooti Doll example is a Private Affiliate Program, they handle everything themselves. Many advertisers go through Affiliate Networks such as Click Bank, Commission Junction, Shareasale, Rakuten. Different networks have their specialised fields, eg; Clickbank is for digital products. Choose a network to suit your niche. Join many networks and use them all. For more info on how the networks operate see my article ‘What is Affiliate Marketing about?’.
Which is the right affiliate program for you?
Some points to consider when choosing affiliate programs;
- Niche relevance (your number one consideration)
- Commission rate that seems fair to you
- Payout threshold and frequency (each program sets a minimum payout ranging from $10.00 to $200.00. I prefer the lowest minimum payout and the shortest payment frequency.)
- Affiliate support
- A long Cookie life.
- Understand the Fees and Conditions
What does cookie life mean to an affiliate?
When a visitor clicks on your affiliate link within the content of your post, or in the image or a banner ad, they are transferred to a product. The cookie is automatically placed to track the connection between the visitor – affiliate – product.
Many programs run a 30 day cookie, which means that if visitor makes a purchase within 30 days of clicking on your link, you get the payment…even if they come from a different link when they come back to buy. You get the credit for introducing the customer to the product… and you get paid.
Two affiliate programs that I am a member of, have lifetime cookies. You gotta love that! It means that if a visitor comes through one of my links and signs up but doesn’t buy, the cookie stores the data. If that same visitor returns next year and buys the product, I get the credit, thanks to the lifetime cookie.
Amazon, on the other hand, has a 24 hour cookie. If the visitor comes and goes through your link without purchasing, but then comes back next week through a different link , you don’t get that sale. It sounds tough, doesn’t it.? But to balance that out, Amazon also has a method where if the customer comes in through your website about dolls (for example) but shops around Amazon and decides to buy a pair of steel cap boots or something in any related or unrelated category, you get the commission. It is possible to earn a commission on steel caps, or babies diapers or fitbits through your ‘doll’ niche.! Cool Huh?
Secret Tip 1

Secret Tip 2.
It takes the same amount of affiliate work to earn a large commission on a high ticket item as it does to earn a small commission on a cheaper product.
Secret Tip 3.
Affiliate Programs can be affected by seasonal demand and lifespan. It is possible for a program to close without notice, causing loss of income. To protect yourself from these fluctuations, join numerous programs to create multi streams of income, independent of each other.
What kind of day to day work do Affiliates do?
Affiliate marketers are work mainly within the content marketing sector on the web. They produce articles, stories, images, videos and podcasts about their chosen niche and publish them onto a blog or website. A lot of time goes into producing quality content and updating posts, which involves research both online and offline.
Their website niche is usually, but not necessarily, a subject that they have a lot of knowledge about or a great interest in. They create helpful and informative or entertaining articles that solve a problem or fill a desire for their audience. Online shoppers like to research products and read reviews, before they buy. They shop around for best value and they want to know what others have experienced. The affiliate helps a buyer decide what brand or product is best for them.
Affiliates connect with their visitors through comments and questions on the site. Many affiliates also utilise the social media platforms to expand their audience reach and grow traffic.
How Janita, from Florida, became a successful affiliate.
Janita had a great idea to put together all of her knowledge about her hobby, breeding rare parrots. She wanted to connect with others who have the same interests and help new people learn about caring for these lovely birds. It really is her passion.
She’s not great with money or English but she’s has so much info and photos about parrots to share. The best way for her to reach out was through a website, where she could post photos, videos and stories.
Her website is like a journal of different activities from week to week. She shows the products and equipment and treatments that she uses for the parrots. She gives her opinion on what works and what doesn’t. She is now recognised as an expert and often is asked for advice about breeding and keeping parrots as pets.
Most products related to her hobby, which is now a full time business, are for sale on Amazon. She became an Amazon Associate (affiliate) and earns a commission whenever people buy any of the products she links to.
Janita is now also an affiliate of a specialist live parrot merchant, under a private affiliate program. She writes a monthly online magazine about special deals for those exotic birds. She charges $4.95per month to subscribers (238 and growing) who are always the first to get the ‘insiders’ trade details of rare birds coming on the market. Occasionally she includes interviews with other well known breeders and has started going to some of the trade fairs, where she expands her knowledge and her contacts and keeps up with new products and services.
She works from home on her laptop and spends most days working between the laptop and her beautiful parrots.
What does it cost to be an affiliate?
Affiliate programs are free to join. If you are asked to pay a membership fee to join any affiliate programs, DO NOT PAY. It is a scam, for sure. Other costs to being an affiliate relate to websites, domain name purchases and website hosting.
- Domain names can cost from .99 cents to $1000’s but a typical domain name is $15 per year.
- Buy A Website The cost of getting your own website can be unpredictable. It depends on who builds it and how complex it needs to be.
- Website Hosting prices also vary immensely. Mostly you pay per website from $5 to $500 per month. They offer packages and bundled plans a bit like phone plans.
What are Janitas overheads?
In Janita’s case she pays $12.99 per year for her domain name from NameCheap. She learned to build her own website for free through Wealthy Affiliate. They teach how to write great content, work with affiliate links and rank a website on google. She learned how to set up the subscription magazine with them too. She chose Wealthy Affiliate to host her website because she is thinking of starting a new site in a different niche. At WA she can have unlimited websites for $49 per month.
It is possible to build your own website for free and get hosting, support and affiliate training for less than a dollar per day with an annual membership at Wealthy Affiliate.
How long does it take to make money with Affiliate Marketing?
How long is a piece of string? There is no clear cut answer. It will depend on your niche and products. It also depends on how user friendly your website is and other factors, like positive Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and traffic.
